About Coach Kayla

M.Ed, USECA Run Coach, NASM-CPT

I started track and field in middle school and fell in love it! I have raced all the sprinting events and ran hurdles, qualifying for and placing at state in the 4×100, and the 4×200 3 out of 4 high school years. I qualified for and placed top 10 at state in high jump, finishing off my senior year with a personal state championship!

I loved attending Summer Track Camp at Texas Tech University. I was able to train with Diane Wholey for high jump, sprints and hurdles. Diane Wholey has coached many levels of athletes including jumping, sprinting and hurdling athletes on an Olympic level. She taught me how to perfect my jumping and sprinting to bring me success.

I went on to run track and high jump for Oklahoma Christian University in the NAIA division while studying Sports Wellness. Since then I have run many 5k’s, 10k’s, half marathons and 2 full marathons to date!

I decided to start doing private, group and online lessons to help athletes learn more about this sport. In the last 4 years of 1-1 coaching, I have coached several state qualifiers, state medalist, state champions, All Americans and collegiate athletic scholarship recipients (to DI & DII schools) with many more to come!

Track brings me so much joy! I hope I can teach you skills and techniques to help you meet your goals!

Strength Training For Runners

Strength & stability training should be an integral part of your training plan, especially if you are wanting to become a stronger/faster runner! Strength training specializes in the use of resistance to build strength, muscle endurance and bone density. It also dramatically reduces the risk of injury in most runners.

Studies show that regular strength training can help prevent or cure IT band syndrome (very common running injury) and it will improve your running economy! Runners should be strength training 2-3 times a week for 20-30 minutes. Runners should focus on:

  • full body movements- movements that use your whole body
  • unilateral movements- single leg or single arm movements (ie. lunges, single arm lifts)
  • core strength- develop and strengthen your core and stability

Here are some workouts I use and share with my athletes to get you started! These are a FREE resource for you!
